Police say Johh Sherwood, a DMV rapper known as Jon Corleone, stabbed his wife to death at a friend’s house in Dale City early Thursday before fleeing, wrecking his car and running away.
The murder happened about 1:30 a.m. in the 15100 block of Concord Drive, where the victim, 21-year-old Erica Renae Sherwood of Triangle, was visiting her friend for New Year’s.
The friend told police she was awakened by screaming and went to check on the victim, who was being chased around the house by John Sherwood, said Prince William police spokesman Jonathan Perok.
“During the encounter, the accused repeatedly stabbed the victim to the upper body,” Perok said. At one point, the victim’s friend was also struck in the face.
After the stabbing, the suspect fled, but crashed his car into a tree in the area of Concord Drive and Cloverdale Road.
In the meantime, the victim’s friend ran to a neighbor’s house, where police were called.
Police and medics arrived to find Erica Sherwood dead of multiple stab wounds, Perok said.
Officers began an extensive search for her husband, calling in a helicopter and police dogs.
During the search a state trooper spotted the suspect on Interstate 95. When the trooper approached, the suspect rain toward the rest area. A short time later, a Fairfax police helicopter found the suspect in the woods on Neabsco Mills Road. He was arrested without incident.
“Detectives learned that the accused went to the residence to speak to the victim over an ongoing dispute. A verbal altercation subsequently ensued which escalated physically resulting in the stabbing,” Perok said.
John Sherwood was charged with murder and assault and battery. He is being held at the Prince William-Manassas regional jail without bond.
The murder, an hour and half after midnight, was Prince William County’s first of the year. Last year, there were six homicides in the county.
